Yesterday I published an article/open letter to the community of Lyons responding to some comments and reactions to the Housing Recovery options process that are beginning to be shared with the greater community.  I found myself feeling very sad about the tone and fears being raised, and found myself truly inspired to share my thoughts.  Writing and sharing this article with the community felt like a big risk to me and very scary, but reading one of my favorite books: The Impossible Will Take a Little While, has inspired me to do what I feel is right.  So, with a lot of prayer and meditation, I wrote this post: www.dianedandeneau.com/2014/03/flood-of-opportunity/

Good Morning, God.  I am stepping into a creative process and I want to work on it with you.  So, here I am with an intention to be totally aligned with what wants to happen for the highest good.  Please guide me…

As I close my eyes, I’m seeing/feeling that I need to release my stress around some of the people in this project.  With this I am shifting into a joyful, confident, and creative space, versus the stressful doing something I think others are expecting me to do – from a place of fear.  As I focus on allowing what will be for the highest good flow through me, I am feeling energized and confident.  Wow, what a difference.  I’m ready to go to work!

“Good morning my love.  Beautiful intention and process.  This is all you have to do to co-create with me.  And it only took a few minutes to see what you needed to do to align with this powerful flow.  You have been doing this unconsciously and sporadically for years, but now you can more intentionally and quickly align yourself to co-create with the Divine flow that resides within you.  Go to work, and come back later.  Tell me how it went.

Love, God”

Ok, what a wonderful, focused, and productive day.  I got a lot done, and it came together very powerfully with grace and ease… even though it was hard work.  With that I feel a great sense of achievement.  Thank you!

Flood of Opportunity

Monday, March 17th, 2014

IMG_1758I think everyone knows that the Town of Lyons and our surrounding community was changed forever in the flood of September 12th, 2013.   Those few days brought immediate devastation to a significant percentage of the community, as well as shutting down the town for a couple of months.  No one was untouched.  Unfortunately, though many were not flooded, no one in the community is unscathed.

As the unfolding story continues, we as a community are faced with how to respond to the changes that have been forced upon us.  And these cataclysmic changes are asking us to step up and make some hard decisions for the healing and health of our community.

I am starting with a premise that we as a community do want to heal and mitigate the damage to those who have been displaced and to our greater community.  From here I feel that we need to be willing to consider all options – many of which were unthinkable before the flood.

I have been going to the Housing Recovery Task Force meetings for several months, listening to a process that has been focusing on where replacement housing that meets the demographics of those displaced, could be.  I am also personally bringing forth a potential project  with cutting edge sustainable development, as an idea of what could be possible.

The task force has done extensive and excellent work evaluating possible properties specifically for replacement housing.  What they have come up with weeded through a lot of different options and concluded with land that has the greatest list of benefits with possibly the least amount of challenges.

After some of these ideas were presented at the March 8th open house, I heard some concerns from the community that are understandable, yet I believe are also manageable.   This is a process that we are in.  There is fear and sadness, as more are realizing that more change is needed to truly heal the community.

I want to talk about some themes that I have heard and would like to address them from my perspective.

“My property value will go down if we have an affordable housing development next door (or in town)”.

The focus for the new housing will be to meet multiple criteria and needs based on what was lost.  Unfortunately, what was lost did affect a high number in the lower income demographic in the community.  Thus, the new housing does need to be affordable for those who lost their homes.  That said, there are many ways that this can be accomplished that are and can be considered.

This community has always been economically diverse, and I believe this is one of the reasons it is an interesting, rich and desirable place to live for many people.

We live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet.  We are still less expensive than Boulder, so I don’t think we have hit the ceiling.  If we build beautifully, sustainably, and desirably, we will be even more desirable.  I have no doubt that we will have continued input on the ideas brought forward, and that whatever we do will only add to the value of the community.

“We can’t loose our open space (dog park – GOCO land).”

One of the main tenets of the task force from the beginning was “no net loss of open space”.  The reality of the flood is that the town (entire community) will be ending up with more open space where people lost their homes and it is not feasible to rebuild.  It has been hard to communicate this specifically, as there are many people up in the air on their status until the FEMA buyouts come through.  The bottom line is, there will be a new place for the dog park.  There will be places for the festival visitors to park.  There will be reasonable road access.  Dealing with these issues are all part of the process.

There are people who live near the current open spaces who could have their views, tranquility, and access to parks changed by more residential housing around them.  This is where the reality of no one being unscathed comes in.  I know this is distressing and I believe that people do care about the impact on those close to any new development.  Because of this I believe we need to, and will be, as sensitive as possible while designing new neighborhoods.

I’ve heard some people say: “let’s put them up in Stone Canyon, or build some high-density housing on a small piece of land in town (or east of town)”.

I think it is fair to replace similar property for what the town will gain and people have lost.  This means; closer to town, yards, etc.  I think this is why people live in Lyons and not in Boulder.

“We can’t remove conservation easements or change open space.”

Boulder County has removed or traded conservation easements and open space in the past. It is a case-by-case evaluation.  This is just one item that I think should be on the list of things on the table after the flood.  If doing this as part of the rebuilding makes sense for the community as a whole, then there is a good chance that the easements could be lifted with whatever conditions make sense.

“Boulder County, Town of Lyons, the task force members, some developers, etc. just want to build a development and are using the flood as an excuse.”

I have talked to Boulder County people working closely with us, as well as knowing the people on the task force very well.  Everyone is concerned with meeting the needs of the community – both with those who need homes as well as how it will impact the greater community.  I don’t see any ulterior motives here.  When I hear comments like this, I feel they add a layer of distrust and drama that does not help the conversation.  Before you say things like this, please make sure you have proof that there is something that seems improper, and then address them directly through the proper channels.  Come to the meetings.  Listen and participate in the discussion.  Please don’t make assumptions and accusations without real understanding of what is going on.  The town has many checks and balances to assure fair business practices and transparent processes.  I can’t say that nothing like this has never happened in the past, but I can speak for what I am seeing now.

This brings me to “conflict of interest”.

No one is free from a conflict of interest.  Some people have what they want and don’t want to “lose” it.  Others have lost everything and really need somewhere to go.  There are renters who lost their home and could not find a place in town because there is now less total housing.  I believe it is fair and beneficial to at a minimum, replace what we had, and be open to more if it makes sense.  There are people who have land that want to help and may “gain” something out of this (market rate value)?  I am interested in supporting the needed new housing by facilitating leading edge sustainable design, which is the kind of housing that I too would like to live in. Everyone has a stake in this.  The question is, can we come together and have honest and open conversations about how we truly and fairly meet the needs of individuals and the greater community?

I’m re-reading one of my favorite inspirational books:  The Impossible Will Take a Little While.  It has many stories about average people who persevered in making transformational changes in the world.  It has inspired me to stay engaged in this conversation and work towards solutions that achieve what is for the highest good for this community.  It is inspiring me to stand up to the fears being voiced and to have the perseverance to work through the concerns.  It is hard, sad, and scary for me – especially since I care about so many of my friends who are all impacted on both sides – (as if there actually were sides).  And I also know this is normal.

I want to say to those who have been displaced, please know that you are cared about and that I, and others, will continue to work to help you (all of us).  And we need to hear your voice, and what you want and need.  I also want those who are scared and uncertain about the changes you may feel are being thrust upon you, to know that every decision can include your voice and, at the same time, I offer you an invitation to be part of the solution(s).  Finally, I want to inspire those who have been working to help, to not get discouraged and stop doing what you feel is right.  We need you.

Right now we have an opportunity to grow as individuals and as a community.  Together we can work through our real and imagined fears and concerns.  I know we all can choose to step into our greatest selves and find creative and inspiring solutions.  Change has come to Lyons.  We now have a flood of opportunity to respond in ways that will make Lyons better than ever for everyone.

I have finished the Song, Higher Ground  – with its final ending:

We’ve climbed to higher ground
And watched our small town drown
But we will rise again
Cause together we are strong
Together we are strong
And everyone belongs…..

With love and appreciation,

Today I’m sharing another beautiful post from Larry P., in the 30 Day Journaling Challenge, on this theme of “what should I do”?.

“Dear God – I know that my value does not lie in what I do.  I know that I Am a Being – not a “doing”.  So why am I always thinking about what I should do next?  Frequently, I am not truly present because I’m thinking about doing something else or being somewhere else.  Other than the time I take for meditation, it is difficult for me to simply sit or lie down and rest during my day.  I am now in a place where I will be alone most of the time with no external responsibilities.  I set this up so I can do my writing.  Even if I apply myself to that task, I will still have a good deal of time to myself.  Is this my opportunity to learn to be still?”

“Dear One – Be still now.  Even when you write to Me, your mind flits from place to place, thinking about what you will do the rest of the day.  Yes – this time is an opportunity both to write your book and to practice Stillness.  You needn’t “learn” Stillness.  You have always known it.  YOU are still.  YOU are always at Peace.  It is only your human consciousness that flits about.  Let that consciousness open to YOU and practice the Stillness that you know.  When your consciousness is still, you know My Peace and My thoughts flow through you.  You find inspiration and creativity for that is My natural state – YOUR natural state.  You needn’t be at a remote lake to know this but you are at a remote lake so practice Stillness there and know that you can enter that place anywhere, anytime, for I Am always with you………..God”

Today I’m sharing another beautiful post from Marilyn W., in the 30 Day Journaling Challenge, on this theme of “committing to a practice”.

“Dear God – It was tempting this morning to just start in on my cleaning and sorting, but then… I made a commitment to myself. To first do this every day for 30 days, and then to do it for another 30 days. Because things are shifting. On the outside, to others, perhaps not, but to me, it’s like a new reality.”

“Marilyn – You see the gifts. You see that there are multiple realities all happening at the same time. You are making choices in the moment. Keep saying yes and see what happens. God is alive. Magic is afoot.”

I would love hear from you – dear reader, what is your practice?

Good morning God.  Today, I am just showing up.  I don’t have any questions, but I am excited to have this meditation and writing time with you.  I am noticing that I have a lot going on, but I feel in alignment with it all and not stressing about anything.  So, today I’ll just let you write.

“Good morning my love.  You aren’t stressing because you keep coming here.  Our relationship is growing stronger and your consciousness is expanding.  There will always be lots of things going on and lots of challenges to work through.  What creates your experience is determined by the “place” from which you perceive and engage with it all.  When you come here with me you shift into the fourth and fifth levels of consciousness that I have explained to you.  This is where you know me, and then realize that you are me.

Love, God”

This beautiful post from Zoe contains a question that I have asked over and over again.  What I continue to find amazing is that “God” is coming through to everyone with such loving and beautiful answers – that contain this consistent thread inviting us to know who we truly are and who “God” truly is.

“On this day I ask, “what now, God?” I cannot see the path ahead, do not know what direction I must go. I feel free and a little frightened, like a child. I wish there was a hand extended in front of me, and a warm voice calling “this is the way.”

“Know that voice as your longing for union with me. For much of this 30 day journey you have thought the voice was from another person, beckoning you to love. Now choose the love inside you, which is spreading outwards, calling others to find me in their own true and opening hearts. Here in this love there is no loneliness. Here are the arms to hold you, as you stretch out your hand to welcome others in.

Below I share my version of this question and God’s answer.

Post from Zoe, from the 30-Day Journaling Challenge:

My question–for all the emotions and suffering I have created for myself, what purpose do they serve? Why can’t I always be complete in my knowing that God is inside me? Why do I always forget?

As you commit to this practice of turning your attention within, your forgetting will dim and the light grow as the new sun in morning. You forget so that you can learn anew. It is the joy of watching a loved one awaken, and that one is your Self.

Good morning, God. I have to say that I wonder if people are getting tired of me writing about my emotional roller coaster.  As I write this I’m seeing my judgement about my struggles and even my pain.  But, I’m also noticing that I’m allowing a variety of feelings to move through me at a deeper level.  I’m feeling sadness with and for my friends in town are struggling, and at the same time I’m also feeling great joy and profound love for and from the beautiful little boy in my life.  I feel this is all from allowing myself to accept what is and deepen into the truth of myself.  Thank you for that invitation.

“Good Morning my love.  You are welcome.  This is exactly what I have been inviting you to do – to be and feel and know the richness of this life – and to allow yourself to experience it.  The key here is allowing.  When you try to run from your pain or feelings, you create stress and fear.  This is also what your (our) song – Don’t be Afraid of Love is about.  Don’t be afraid of anything – especially your feelings.  Your choice is to be in love with them, or to be in fear of them.

Love, God”

Good morning, God.

“Good morning, Diane.”

Today, I just need to feel you here.

“I’m here.”

Funny, I had the impulse to write, “I know”.  But, there is a part of me that does not know – that is scared.

“I know.”

Today I read a post from Marilyn, who is in the 30-Day challenge, sharing some profound sadness around a loss for her, and I can feel it so powerfully. With this, I just got an insight that I don’t want to be in pain.  I’m afraid of pain as I am so sensitive and it feels like a place I get stuck – the home that I also know as depression.  I’m afraid to go there – to be debilitated again.

“I know.  It’s ok, my love.  Pain is part of life.  Depression for you was a habit and became a trap.  It is a physiological reality and so you need to do what you know you need to do to take care of yourself.  Your Daily M.E.D.S., which begins with connecting with me and love, will allow you to be with what is and not get trapped.  From here you can can feel the pain of the world through the perspective of love.  For if you did not love, you could not cry.  This is all part of the extraordinary experience of being alive.  Let it flow through you and receive its gifts. Welcome home.  I am always here. You are safe.

Love, God”

Good morning, God. Yesterday was an emotional day.  There are those who thought they were spared by the flood who are now seeing ramifications to their lives as the town is looking for land to rebuild the lost neighborhoods.  My heart is breaking again for these people and for those who want to come back home.  I am especially saddened by a good friend who hurting.  This is hard!

“Good morning my love.  You are so sensitive and caring.  It is also good that you did what you needed to, to take care of yourself by spending time with me and those who love you.  Know that this project is not something that you are “doing”, but something you are part of shepherding.  As you commit to always asking “what wants to happen for the highest good”, and let go of your attachment to how it will turn out, you won’t need to carry guilt or shame.  You are being guided, so keep listening and trusting.  This does not mean you will be spared from the emotions.  I know you don’t like to feel pain. But, when you detach from that pain meaning something (about you), you will be empowered with compassion and able give the love that is being called for.

Love, God”

Good morning, God.  This is a follow-on to Larry’s post yesterday.  There is so much that does not make sense in the world.  We humans are destroying our home and doing horrible things to each other, and there is so much that need to be changed and fixed.  But I hear you say – to be with you, and be loving – and do what I want.  In some ways I get this, but in other ways it feels selfish.  How do I wrap my mind around this?

“Good morning my love.  You don’t.  In fact you need to unwrap your mind from all of this and let go of your ideas about everything.  We have talked about levels of consciousness and that your true knowledge and wisdom doesn’t come from your mind, but from your heart/soul (me).  So, your thinking about what needs fixing is coming from a level of consciousness that is limited and afraid.  This does not mean that you won’t participate in the world, but that you will from a greater understanding of what is yours to do and what is not.  In fact, when you do what you truly want, what you will want to do will be anything but selfish.  So, unwrap your mind, and open the gift that life is, and that you are.

Love, God”

Today I’m sharing a post from one of the 30-Day Journaling Challenge participants.  This is a question that I and so many have asked, and I love this answer.

“Good morning, God!  Thank you for this beautiful day.  Here the sun is shining, the birds are singing, the ducks are swimming on the lake, and a cool breeze caresses my legs and arms.  Here the grass is green and mowed, the neighborhood is quiet except for traffic a little ways off, and people are peacefully starting their mornings in their safe, comfortable, and attractive homes.  Yet, in other places on the earth, perhaps not very far from here at all, children go hungry, people are at war – with each other and in their own hearts, the songs of the birds go unheard, and Your Peace is unknown.  Though I don’t dwell on those things, it saddens me to know that it’s true.  I know I don’t have to save the world by running to every place of need, though sometimes it is creative for me to do so.  Yet I sit here and wonder how I can best extend Your Love Joy, and Peace into this world in ways that will help those people I will never meet…………Larry”

“Bless you for your kind heart, Larry.  It is through your consistent expression of kindness, of loving thoughts and actions, or Being in My Peace yourself that you see the separateness fade away and know that your heart is One with that of the starving child, the embattled soldier, and the people mired in anger and sadness around the world.  You have an impact on them through your heart, consciousness, Spirit, and Being.  You can build houses with Habitat, contribute money to Kiva, go to help in disaster areas, and many other things on the physical plane when those seem fitting.  You can write your books and offer workshops.  You can smile at people on the street and bring lightness to waitresses and grocery store clerks.  Or you might simply be reading in your room or writing to Me.  The effect that you have is all about whether you stay in My Peace and My Joy – Your Peace and Your Joy – in whatever you are doing.  Give that to the world.  It’s why you came here…………God”

Good Morning, God.  Today I’m feeling calm.  I don’t really have any questions.  But, I’m still here.

“Good morning my love.  Thank you for coming here.  I’m glad you come to be with me.  Questions nor even dialogue is required.  Just your presence.  I love you.

Love, God”

As I write this and sit here I’m feeling a wash of love and joy come over me.  I’m feeling a greater sense of peace and power and a great sense of purpose.  This is a wonderful way to start my day!  Thank you God.
