Good morning my friends and family. Last night I saw a BBC film on Vivian Maier, at the Lyons Cinema and Photography Center. She was an amazing photographer who took thousands of photos of people in everyday life. I love her sense of composition and ability to capture a profound sense of the moment. I don’t think anyone knows her real intent with her work, and she printed very few of them. But she kept her negatives and few developed photos in a storage locker until she could no longer pay for it, and then they were sold off to many different people. Her work has been “discovered” and now, after her death, there is a whole new chapter where she is being seen as one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. More about her here: https://www.artsy.net/artist/vivian-maier
The part of the story I am inspired by is that she seemed focused on creating the art, not what should become of it. This was her calling – maybe her compulsion? She was a very unique and private person, who spent her days seeking out images that spoke to her. She would see them in her view finder, then take one shot at the perfect moment in time. She had film in the camera, but most of these images she would never see again.
I find when I let what is calling me to see and create – without any thought as to where it will go or even what it will mean, gives me permission to create with abandon. As with the Canvas Journals, it did not make any sense to buy $50.00 journal pages (canvases), especially when I was relaunching my art career and living on savings – AND I didn’t want anyone to see them anyway. But, I did. The compulsion – the Divine call, won out. Now, 11 years later, they are emerging. Who knows where it will go or what it will mean. That part is up to you.
I imagine that Vivian would be pleased that people are enjoying her photographs, but since she was such a private person, I’m sure she would hate all the interest in her. Maybe it all turned out perfectly in the end.
Thank you God, for the compulsion to go to the movies last night. Thank you Kenneth Wajda, for bringing this great film. And thank you, Vivian for following your calling.
Love, Diane

Diane,I haven’t yet seen the documentary, but a few months ago I followed a post on Facebook that led me to discover Vivian Maier’s work and I was flabbergasted by her images. I’ve been a lover of photography for a long time and was blown away by the greatness of her work. Putting that together with her personal story is very humbling. And yes, it is an example of the value of following what is calling us without any expectations or hope for external reward, but for its own sake. I’m so glad you brought this woman and her work – and her implied message – to the attention of your audience.
